2024 Highlights and Recap

A Year of Growth

This past year was a stellar year for the Abba’s House ministry to refugees. After a particularly challenging year in 2023, we were extremely grateful for a season where things turned healthy again, our rooms were full, and many lives were touched. Thank you to all who stuck with us so faithfully as we did a major house renovation, developed partnerships with new resettlement agencies, and took on a new construction project. All of that took some time and money, but we are beginning to see it pay off. Read more about it below!

Numerous families welcomed in 2024

Abba’s House is a home of welcome that receives newly arriving refugees and provides them with an 8 week stay at our ministry home. We provide hospitality and love, a safe place to sleep, great food, life skills mentoring, an education program for the kids, help with transitioning to their first apartment, and many other “perks” that come with being an Abba’s House family member. This past year we had quite a few families go through our full program, from countries including Cuba, Afghanistan, Haiti, Turkiye, China, Pakistan, Iran, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. They come with some fascinating stories, a lot of hopes and dreams, some significant wounds, and a fierce determination to make good with the chance they have been given here in the United States.

Other highlights

In addition to a much heavier year of new refugee arrivals, we had a number of other significant moments. Over the summer, we held our first ever “Abba’s House Camp” as we invited back all of the local youth and children who are connected to Abba’s House. While they enjoyed a day of camp outdoors, all the moms gathered at the house for a day of fellowship, food, and activities. It was a banner day! Also, we began construction on our second residence cabin (completion in late Jan. 2025!), we added our first part time paid staff position, (welcome aboard, Julie!), and developed some strategic partnerships with refugee agencies Interfaith, YMCA, and Church World Service, following the unexpected closing of Refugee Services of Texas.

Thank You to our amazing partners

We are so blessed by the many volunteers, partner churches, and businesses that have poured into this ministry over the past year. Your involvement, donations, and heart are what make all this happen. We appreciate each and every one of you, and rejoice at the good we are able to do together. To borrow a phrase from the good book of Philippians: “I thank my God every time I remember you.  In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy  because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.”
